Where to Run in San Diego: Explore Mission Bay Starting From Crown Point

This picturesque location not only offers a stunning backdrop for your run but also provides a variety of features that cater to runners of all levels. Join me as I share my recent experience running with the San Diego Run Club at Crown Point and discover why it’s a fantastic choice for your next run.
A Flat Course with Spectacular Views
One of the most appealing aspects of running at Crown Point is its flat course. For those seeking a level terrain, this is a dream come true. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned runner, the absence of significant inclines allows you to focus on your stride and maintain a steady pace throughout your run.
Speed Workouts
For those aiming to improve their speed and endurance, Mission Bay is an ideal location. Its flat surface presents an excellent opportunity for speed workouts, where you can push your limits and strive for personal records. Be it interval training or tempo runs; you’ll find Mission Bay to be a favorable course for accomplishing your speed-related goals. However, keep in mind that this path is primarily concrete.
Personally, I prefer running on asphalt over concrete when I need to do speed work. If you’re like me, run towards Fiesta Island for your warmup and then do your speedwork on the island where the road is asphalt. Once on Fiesta Island, the large loop is 4 miles and the small loop is 2 miles around.
Navigating the Crowds
While the flat terrain and scenic views are a major draw, it’s essential to consider the popularity of the location. The boardwalk can get quite crowded, particularly during peak hours. To avoid the masses, stay on the bay side where the course is less congested than Mission Beach (ocean side boardwalk), providing a more serene and peaceful running experience.
Convenient Amenities
Mission Bay caters to runners with its conveniently located bathrooms and water stations, ensuring you stay hydrated and comfortable during your run. The availability of these facilities eliminates any concerns about being far from necessities, allowing you to focus solely on your workout.
In addition, San Diego Run Club offers aid stations stocked with gatorade and water approximately every 3 miles so you don’t have to carry your water and electrolytes to stay hydrated.
Perfect Weather for Running
San Diego is known for its favorable weather. On my recent run, there was a marine layer early in the morning that dissipated, revealing a beautiful sunny day post run. The temperature at the start of the run was a 65 degrees, making it a comfortable climate for running. Remember to apply sunscreen and wear appropriate clothing to protect yourself from the sun’s rays during warmer periods.
